University of Garmian Continues Anfal Commemoration with Cultural and Academic Activities

As part of the ongoing series of events commemorating the Anfal genocide, the Genocide Center at the University of Garmian organized a range of activities on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, in the presence of the university's vice presidents.

The day began with the opening of a photography exhibition titled Kurdish Cry in the Desert by photographer Kosar Omer. The exhibition was inaugurated by Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed I. Khalil, Vice President for Scientific Affairs and Higher Education.

Following the exhibition, a formal ceremony was held. Dr.Khalil delivered a speech on behalf of the University Presidency, in which he emphasized that the purpose of commemorating Anfal extends beyond mourning.

He stated, “As a scientific and academic institution, the University of Garmian has continuously strived to contribute to the documentation and research of the Anfal genocide. The establishment of the Genocide Center at our university reflects our strong commitment to genocide studies.”

The event continued in the presence of Professor Dr. Ezadin J. Darwish, Vice President for Administrative and Financial Affairs, along with several deans, faculty members, staff, students, and guests.

A documentary titled The Importance of Poetry in Reviving Anfal Stories was screened, followed by a panel discussion featuring Khalid Sulaiman (writer and journalist), Smko Sabir (writer and genocide activist), and Professor Dr. Omed B. Brzo (Director of the Genocide Center at the University of Garmian). At the conclusion of the panel, the university presented honorary awards to the participants.

The ceremony concluded with the distribution of issues 1 and 2 of Genocide, the academic magazine published by the Genocide Center, to all attendees.
