2025-02-24

To address the issue of stray dogs in Kalar, the Directorate of Health and Safety at the University of Garmian organized a scientific workshop with the participation of relevant stakeholders from Kalar and the Garmian administration.

On Monday, February 24, 2025, in the presence of the President of the University of Garmian, the Mayor of Kalar, representatives of the Garmian administration, civil society organizations, and environmental activists, a scientific workshop titled “Addressing the Issue of Stray Dogs” was held in the Sherwana Hall at the College of Science.

At the beginning of the workshop, the President of the University of Garmian delivered a speech, emphasizing that the university is not only an institution for education and degree conferral but also a key center for societal development and the resolution of social, economic, and environmental challenges.

He further stated: “We are fully aware of the problem of stray dogs and its impact on public safety and security in our region. This issue requires a scientific and humane solution that ensures both animal welfare and community safety.”

Following this, Dr. Aram Ahmad Samin, Dr. Karzan Mohammed Abdullah, and Dr. Bestun Abubakr Jaafar—veterinarians and experts in the field—discussed the causes of the increasing stray dog population, dog-borne diseases, and potential solutions for managing the situation effectively.

As a key outcome of the workshop, it was decided to establish a special committee comprising representatives from the University of Garmian, relevant authorities from the Garmian and Kalar administrations, and civil society organizations. This committee will work toward identifying a suitable location to establish a shelter for stray dogs.
