University of Garmian Student Showcases Innovative Bio-Tech Project at "Made in Iraq" Exhibition

2025-12-04

On December 4, 2025, a student from the University of Garmian participated in the third edition of the "Made in Iraq" exhibition with a groundbreaking scientific project focused on environmental sustainability.
Bilal Abdullah Mohammed, a third-year Chemistry student at the College of Science, presented his innovative project titled "Algae Air." The project involves the design and construction of an advanced Photobioreactor, a biotechnological system that utilizes microalgae to combat air pollution.
How "Algae Air" Works
The system is engineered to be connected to emission sources such as generators and factories. The microalgae act as a biological filter by:
Absorbing toxic smoke and carbon dioxide (CO2).
Converting these pollutants into pure oxygen (O2) through the process of photosynthesis.
Repurposing waste into economic value by processing the leftover algae into organic fertilizer.
A History of Success
The "Made in Iraq" exhibition is the largest of its kind in the country, attracting merchants and entrepreneurs from across the nation between December 3 and December 6, 2025. This is not the first time Bilal’s work has gained recognition:
Sulaymaniyah Entrepreneurship Summit
: His project was selected as one of the top 125 out of 1,334 competing ideas due to its strong scientific foundation.
University of Garmian Hackathon (August 2025): Under the "CoCreate My City" program—organized by WeDo and supervised by the university's Career Development Center (CDC)—Bilal secured first place in a competition attended by the Consul General of the Netherlands.
This achievement highlights the University of Garmian’s role in fostering innovation and preparing students to solve real-world environmental and economic challenges.
