The University of Garmian has successfully secured funding through the ERASMUS-EDU-2025-STRAND1 initiative, a European Union program that provides financial and logistical support to higher education institutions outside the EU. This achievement marks a significant step in strengthening the university’s international collaboration and academic development.
Notably, the University of Garmian is among the institutions officially registered in the European Commission portal, holding a valid Participant Identification Code (PIC). This registration allows the university to submit proposals for EU-funded scholarships and academic projects and to receive financial support (grants) in partnership with universities that are members of the European Commission.
The funded project, titled Innovative Pathway for Cultural Heritage and Tourism Development in Iraqi Kurdistan, aims to promote interdisciplinary approaches to cultural heritage studies across universities in the Kurdistan Region. It also seeks to build institutional capacity in higher education and foster regional and international cooperation in support of cultural tourism.
The project’s core objectives include:
Establishing a modern laboratory and an advanced research center at the University of Garmian.
Offering specialized academic training programs for faculty and staff.
Facilitating joint academic activities between the University of Garmian and both public and private sector institutions.
Enhancing employability and encouraging sustainable development through the promotion of cultural tourism.
Spanning a period of three years, the project is expected to significantly enhance the research infrastructure at the University of Garmian. The new facilities will empower researchers to conduct innovative studies, contribute to the revitalization of cultural tourism, and strengthen the university’s role in regional academic advancement.
