President's Speech

Welcome to the official website of the University of Garmian. This website is launched to introduce and present all the scientific, academic, and administrative activities of our University.

The University of Garmian was established by the Council of Ministers’s decree no. (1670) on 08/07/2010, in recognition of the importance that the Kurdistan Regional Government placed on the scientific needs of our region in general and the Garmian area in particular.

The beginning of the establishment of Garmian University goes back to the transfer of the Colleges of Education (opened in 2004) and Basic Education (opened in 2008) in Kalar, and the Colleges of Language and Humanities (opened in 2004) and Physical Education and Sports Sciences (opened in 2006) in Khanaqin. These colleges were initially part of the University of Sulaimani but later were integrated into the University of Garmian in 2011.

This university has seen significant growth in a certain period, for this purpose, several new colleges and departments have been established which are: (the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences) in Kifri, (the College of Science) and (the College of Medicine) in Kalar, (College of Computer and Information Technology) in Khanaqin addition to the (Department of Civil Engineering) and (Department of Law) in Kalar which were established as two independent scientific departments in our university.

Currently, our university consists of: -

- 8 Colleges.

- 30 morning departments.

- 10 evening departments.

In addition, it comprises (Research Center), (Pedagogy Center), (Genderism Center), (Career Development Center), (Genocide Center) and several directorates and other units affiliated with the president’s office, vice president’s offices for administrative affairs and finance, and scientific affairs and higher education.

Garmian University’s commitment to scientific development took a significant step forward in 2012 with the launch of Master’s programs. This initiative aimed to address the growing need for qualified academic staff within our various departments. This success was followed by the opening of Higher Diplomas, additional Master’s programs, and PhD programs in other scientific disciplines. Hundreds of students have since benefitted from these offers, with the educational opportunities expanding annually. Currently, the university hosts 200 students enrolled in higher diploma, master’s, and doctoral programs.

Garmian University actively fosters academic and scientific exchange by signing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with local and international universities and research institutions.

Up to now, our university has organized 11 local scientific conferences and 4 international scientific conferences, along with numerous other academic, intellectual, and cultural events.

The primary objective of our university is to foster strong scientific collaborations with esteemed international universities in the future. Drawing from both domestic and international experiences, we aim to elevate Garmian University to become a leading academic institution in Kurdistan and Iraq. Additionally, we seek to strengthen our connection with the community, thereby enhancing our capacity to serve the broader interests of Kurdistan, with a particular focus on the Garmian region.
